Economic
development is not traditionally considered a job for engineers. HEB Engineers of North Conway is working to
change that perception. For over a
decade, the employee-owned consulting firm has worked with non-profit
development groups to plan for and build incubator space for start-up companies
and job training facilities.
HEB
worked with the Mount Washington Valley Economic Council to build the
Technology Village in Conway and continues to support the business park’s
development plans. In 2009, the firm
worked with the Northern Community Investment Corporation and other local
stakeholders to develop a plan for a new business park in Groveton, and in 2011
developed a new master plan for the City of Berlin focused on revitalizing
business in the downtown core. Most
recently, HEB provided survey and engineering for the Grafton County Economic
Development Council’s Enterprise Center at Plymouth, currently under construction.
Jay Poulin, civil engineer responsible for HEB’s business development, discussed
the firm’s role in these development projects.
“Most people think of HEB for bridge and road reconstructions, not for
planning and development. We are proud
of the space that has been created at the Tech Village and look forward to
seeing GCEDC completed and in use. As a
professional firm in the North Country, helping develop spaces for new
businesses and generate professional jobs is extremely satisfying.”
